Intel Atom: Avoton C2000 – Minor power usage, Major power – Cheap storage config

Many still suspect something like an Atom D525 or a N2600 when hearing it – Known from many Netbooks and cheap Nettops but also found it’s way into the server business (Supermicro/HP). This is… wrong. The new Avoton Atoms are unrelated and have a much broader usage despite the same name. Old (2010) Intel Atom D525 (Dual core, 13W TDP) score around 700 CPUBenchmark points, a newer N2600 (Dual core, 3W TDP, scores at just 900 as well. The Avoton C2750 scores at a massively increased 3790 making it viable to be used as KVM node or massive ZFS (10+…

Gun/Carry and Knive laws in Austria

(I wrote this some time ago for a blog that requested it, but they ignored me later, so now here) Let me start with saying that the gun/weapon laws in Austria are pretty relaxed compared to most of the EU still. I am not a lawyer and this is no legal advice, i do not guarantee that all is correct however i ensure you i tried my best to compile and verify it. Although not guns i decided to include knives as well in this article as the Austrian law is different than in most EU countries as well, both…

DYI: Router to 12V ATX + convert the old PSU to a 5/12V SATA/MOLEX/USB PSU

>Sponsored by the inventions of GlaxoSmithKline paid by the Austrian health insurance (i hope they get ripped off by GSK), writing might be a bit unconcentrated… that does not work yet exactly. As i use a x86 PC as router i had no direct option for Wifi and with a local stick in the bridge i would get DHCP issues (VPN bound for example, and i would have to run it on x86) – I had my old Dlink DIR-825 with DD-WRT still and got that to work alongside ebtables to allow DHCP only for the wifi while maintaining the…

2014

Yes, i should blog more, or Twitter more, but i’m reachable by mail more or less, variables have been changed (you likely will not get that, sorry :)). In the meanwhile i want to point to https://raymii.org/ for excellent content in a very similar direction, as well as a lot of things i had no time or motivation to do (like publishing a lot of scripts and tools) yet. I will try to blog more again after some things have been resolved which currently is not that easy; we’ll see how that goes, in the meanwhile some linklists and other…

Rant: IPv6 in 2013 – Hosting Providers/Datacenters

Lets rant about IPv6 a bit? Might be more articles in future. IPv6 is easy to setup if you have BGP or your upstream is willing to cooperate in any imaginable way (static routed, bgp default, bgp full). If you don’t have upstream on Layer2 direct you don’t deserve to host anything for anyone. No excuse. Elementary: Your switching has no IPv6 support? Nobody runs this still, if you do then you don’t deserve it to host anything for anyone. Buy new switches. ZFS automatic hourly snapshot & mount script

This script creates a snapshot each hour and mounts it to a specified directory, providing easy read-only access to backup data, i found the need to write one due to the functionality issues in zfs-auto-snapshot and no mounting ability. Don’t forget to edit before usage. wget https://rdns.im/ul/zfs-snapshot-hourly.sh -O /usr/sbin/zfs-snapshot-hourly && nano /usr/sbin/zfs-snapshot-hourly && chmod +x /usr/sbin/zfs-snapshot-hourly

Windows 8/Windows Server 2012: Mount samba/ZFS share over SSH tunnel

{{unknown}}As it took me more than 2 hours to figure out why this just would not work here’s a small tutorial to mount an SMB share over SSH (in my case Cygwin, but PuTTy should work as well): First, add a new hardware loopback adapter + an IP (in this example 10.1.1.10) as described here but do uncheck ALL boxes in the adapter settings except IPv4 connectivity (including the Client for Microsoft Networks): http://sumofungus.wordpress.com/2010/07/23/ssh-tunneling-samba-on-windows-7/ Do note that the adapter has a slightly different name in Windows 8/2012 – “Microsoft KM-TEST Loopback Adapter”. Now press Windows Key + r and enter…

Some updates about my case(s)

After the update here i will post future updates only here, mainly due to easier access to them. Yes, i got my guns actually back after nearly 5 months by the end of April – Some ammunition (7,62x54mm R for one of my Mosin Nagants) was ironically confiscated permanently as “war ammunition (DE)“, the irony in this is mainly that i bought them entirely legal in a store in Graz along with a gun for the caliber (that i got back). So far i got no legal problems for this ammo, even if the sale was illegal this is clearly…

Yet another rant about PayPal

It seems PayPal never changed, besides all marketing bullshit and the CEOs Yesterday someone accessed my PayPal account (which had a pretty strong password, likely obtained by a MITM while on travel in the Balkans) and tried to buy something, sending the money as gift to someone else. Ok, you may think, let’s raise a dispute about unauthorized access to the account and everything will be fine, right? No. I raised a dispute at around 20:00, got confirmation about it at 21:10, and today in the morning… declined. No reason for it, no explanation, nothing. The funny part about this…
